Dive into Joanne B. Kaar’s exhibition Shipshape, telling the story of Strathnaver’s boatbuilding heritage. Free with a ticket to our mill.
Joanne B. Kaar’s Shipshape exhibition, exploring the techniques and tools used in traditional boat building, will open on the 1st of April in the John O’Groats Mill’s Kiln Gallery. It will run until the 12th of July.
The exhibition is the culmination of Joanne’s 2024 artist residency at the Strathnaver Museum. Inspired by the Strathnaver community boat building project, Joanne began to explore the intangible cultural heritage surrounding traditional boat building tools, techniques and the words used.
Addressing the question of how do we record and preserve ICH Joanne turned to printing techniques with a focus on woodcut. Joanne spent time with the boat builders, learning and recording the process, tools and words associated with clinker-built boats.
Admission is free with entry to the John O’Groats Mill. The mill is open Thursday-Tuesday, 10am-5pm. Last entry 4pm.
