In search of Emperor Moths

May 20 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Search for Emperor Moths with Graham Thompson, A Far North Naturalist.

Join me on a gentle walk in search of these spectacular insects in the vicinity of two local Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Join me on a gentle walk in search of spectacular Emperor Moths and their splendid vase-shaped cocoons on the edge of two splendid Sites of Special Scientific Interest (Ben Griams and Badenloch Bogs), which are notified as such because of unspoiled blanket bog with its associated special flora and breeding wading birds. We’ll be following a hill track, on gradual slopes, so walking is not too difficult. Approximately 4 miles distance. We will aim to get to a spectacular highland loch. Birds we might see include Osprey, Golden Eagle, Red- and Black-throated Diver, Greenshank, Golden Plover, Red Grouse and more. Splendid scenery.

Meeting point: there are two ‘lay-by’ sites, at What3Words ///memory.duplicate.really (NC78673779), and ///amplified.cactus.securing (NC78713758). Note that we are NOT meeting at The Garvault Hotel.

Alternatively, pre-walk (and post-walk) lunches and refreshments can be purchased at the Garvault Hotel, located just off the B871 single track road, and it might be possible to leave your vehicle there for the duration of the walk. What3Words: stared.flashing.clipboard. NC78153866. Please contact the proprietors to check.

Not suitable for dogs. There are grazing animals on site.
