On Saturday, 5th September, Zeki Basan, founder and head instructor at Highland Survival Skills, is coming from Glenlivet to spend a day with us at the Ferrycroft Centre, from 11am-4pm.
Zeki is a nationally recognised wilderness and traditional-skills expert who has led expeditions in Greenland, worked as a glacier guide in Iceland and appeared in a number of documentaries.
He will talk about his fascinating life, his vision and his deep knowledge of the natural world. The day will include learning how discarded salmon skin can be carefully processed and transformed into leather, an old, low-waste craft that makes use of the whole fish, and the skills and knowledge that connect us with the landscape. Fish skins can be tanned into strong, flexible leather and used to make small items such as pouches, wallets, jewellery, knife sheaths and decorative panels. This reflects Zeki Basan’s teaching of traditional tanning and leatherwork, which helps preserve ancient skills while making respectful use of natural resources.
Everyone will get a piece of salmon skin to take home.
This is a very special visit and a fantastic opportunity to meet and learn from someone at the top of his field.
Please wear suitable clothing for the weather.
