Set to a wonderful backdrop of fields, hills and glen and looking out to a distant sea view, Birkenshaw is a gorgeous and cosy space with rustic, handmade, vintage and bespoke decor. Our ethos is to be as environmentally friendly as we can be and we really hope this shows in every aspect of your stay.
The hut is fully insulated with British sheep's wool and heated by a hobbit woodburning stove. There is a full sized double bed with organic, sprung mattress and organic or vintage bedding and also a small table and chairs with fireside chair for snoozing by the woodburner.
A short walk takes you to our beautiful compost loo with a view, converted from an old shed and using upcycled church pews.
In the sun room, up at the main house, there are cooking and washing up facilities including cutlery, cooking equipment, cups and crockery. Also there is a fridge with a small freezer compartment, an induction hob, electric kettle, small table top oven/grill and washing up station. In addition, there is a dining area, electric points for charging gadgets, plenty of room for drying clothes or wet boots or just to sit for a while and take in the views. There's also a tap for top up water just outside too.
We have a quirky outdoor veggie garden shower, for those of you feeling brave, using collected rainwater. A kettle full of hot is available from the sunroom for those who like to take the edge off!
A complimentary box of fire wood and kindling is provided and more can be bought, if required, for a small charge. An outside fire pit is also provided for small campfires and an area for your own camping stove, should you wish to bring one. Please use responsibly for your pleasure. We do ask, please, that you don't use disposable barbeques, thank you.
We do have a lockable shed for safe storage of bicycles, should you need it.
Reluctantly we have to say no pets as the fencing is not suitable at the moment. It's something we want to work on.
Badninish is a small crafting community surrounded by majestic hills and teeming with nature. We are tucked away down a quiet lane, but only a mily or so away from the NC500, so best of both worlds. It's 5 miles to the beautiful town of Dornoch with wonderful beaches, eateries and shops.
Lovely walks and hikes from our doorstep.
Loch Fleet nature reserve can be seen from the hut.
We are North facing and dark skies offer views of Aurora Borealis, when in season.
