Discover this iconic highland viewpoint rich in history and wildlife.
Perched above the tranquil waters of Loch Fleet, the ruins of Skelbo Castle offer a striking glimpse into Scotland’s medieval past. Dating back to the 14th century, this early Norman motte and bailey fortress was once second only to nearby Dunrobin Castle in regional importance. Originally the seat of the Sutherlands of Skelbo, the castle remained their main residence even after they inherited the Lordship of Duffus in the 14th century.
Today, the ruins include remnants of the keep, curtain walls, and a 17th-century house. Though not easily accessible on foot, the castle can be admired from a roadside viewpoint, offering a dramatic silhouette against the Highland sky.
When stopping at the viewpoint on the roadside to view the castle, don’t forget to turn around to enjoy the views of the Fleet, where you may even be treated to a glimpse of some sunbathing seals.
