Rosal Clearance Village

Rosal is one of the most evocative sites on the Strathnaver Trail, marking the heart of the Highland Clearances in Sutherland.

Once a thriving township, Rosal was forcibly cleared in 1814 to make way for sheep farming under the Countess of Sutherland’s estate. The ruins of over 70 buildings now sit quietly on the hillside, offering a haunting reminder of a lost way of life.

Interpretation boards help visitors imagine the daily rhythms of the village before its destruction. The trail also connects to other clearance sites and prehistoric remains throughout Strathnaver, making it a powerful journey through Scotland’s social and archaeological history.
