Mey Highland Games is a proudly inclusive annual event with Royal patronage, held at the John O’Groats Showground in the first week in August. It’s a fantastic family day out celebrating the hospitality, culture, traditions and sporting talent of the North Highlands.
The first Mey Highland Games took place in the village of Mey to mark the 70th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Attending as Guest of Honour, The Queen Mother was so delighted by the event that she encouraged its organisers to establish it as an annual celebration.
Inclusivity lies at the heart of Mey Highland Games. The event actively promotes equality and diversity, providing a platform for people of all abilities to participate. The Games host a variety of traditional Highland Games activities from Pipe Bands and Highland Dancing to Caber tossing, weight for height and track events for all ages. The highlight of the event for many is finale of the tug of war.
There is always a fantastic array of stalls selling local crafts and produce as well as local food vendors, games, stalls and attractions located around the showground on the day.
