Watten Loch

Season:	1st May – 30th September – Sunday Fishing Available
Method:	Fly Fishing Only
Costs:	£40 per day per boat (2 anglers), £40 per day for outboard engine. All boats are first class 15ft Loch Lomond’s and can be supplied with Yamaha outboard engines if required.
Popular patterns:	Sedgehogs in Claret & Olive, Loch Ordie Muddler, Watten Warrior, Ke-He, Dirty Weeker, Snatchers in various colours, also Kate Maclaren.
Loch Information:	Being the most productive and famous of all the Caithness Lochs, Loch Watten is regarded by many anglers as “The Leven of the North”. This natural and unspoiled loch attracts many visitors year after year to fish for real “wild” brown trout. The crystal clear water with a lime rich base, and an average depth of 7-8 foot is a fly fishers dream, with 90% of the sport being floating lines and top of the water techniques. Fishing by boat is most productive and an outboard motor and drogue is recommended as Watten is 3 miles long by ¼ mile wide. The average weight of the trout are about 1lb and are blood red in colour but most daily baskets host a few in the 1½ – 2lb bracket. Every season provides a few trophy fish in the 3-4lb range and can be as silver as a sea trout or a true “yellow belly” brownie with big red spots

Toftingall Loch

Season:	1st May – 5th October – Sunday Fishing Available
Method:	Fly Fishing Only
Costs:	£40 per day per boat (2 anglers), £40 per day for outboard engine. £5 per day per angler for bank fishing.
Popular patterns:	Clan Chief, Haul”y”Gwynt, Bibio, Ke-He, Doobry.
Loch Information:	Loch Toftingall must be one of the most secluded and peaceful lochs in Caithness where a 5 minute drive from the main road brings you not only a delightful loch but more importantly privacy! This loch is small in comparison to it’s neighbour Loch Watten but the quality of the fishing is just as good. The Loch is completely surrounded by trees and during early June until mid July it has an excellent mayfly hatch with sport second to none. Poaching is one problem with this loch. “The Osprey” fishes here on a daily basis and anglers have to take a back seat as they get entertained by mother nature; an Osprey taking a trout before your eyes is a sight that will stay with you for years to come.This Loch is also very shallow and dry fly fishing can be productive during the summer months with the average weight being ¾lb – 1lb although fish around 2lbs being quite common. This is a nice loch for a family day out as there is a picnic bench etc. and plenty of wild life to see (Otters, Roe Deer, Fox, Osprey, duck, etc.)

St John’s Loch

Season:	1st April – 30th September – Sunday Fishing Available.
Method:	Fly Fishing Only
Costs:	£40 day per boat (2 anglers), £40 per day for outboard engine.
Popular patterns:	Golden Olive Bumble, Red-Arsed Green Peter, French Partridge Mayfly. Lough Arrow Mayfly, Sooty Olive & Connemera Black.
Loch Information:	St. Johns loch is situated just outside Dunnet, a small village about 6 miles East of Thurso. It is a reasonably small loch, about half a mile by half a mile. In June there is also a prolific Mayfly hatch. The trout average just over a pound, although 3-4lb fish are also recorded every year. St. Johns Association are made up of local fisherman who also run a local hatchery, ensuring that a good level of stocked fish is maintained year after year.

Method:	Fly – All Season Worm – 1st April – 30th September Spinner – 11th Feb – 15th May
Costs:	Rod per day – £30. Rod per week – £120. Reductions are given to Juniors, OAP’S and Registered Disabled.
Information:	The Wick River is a slow moving spate river which offers approximately 10 miles of double bank fishing for Salmon, Trout & Sea trout. This highly productive river hosts over 40 named pools, including: The Pot. Katie,Gows. Borgie, Tarroul and Quarry Hole. All of which can easily be covered by a 12-13ft Salmon fly rod or single-handed grilse rod. There is good access and parking available, and as the banks are free of trees wading is not necessary. Salmon are expected from late March with summer rain giving the best prospects and conditions for the Grilse runs. The annual catch remains solely in the hand of the “rain gods”. The 10 year average is just over 400 Salmon.
