Overview
The House of The Northern Gate has a stunning location on Dunnet head with views over the Pentland Firth to Orkney, with direct access to a secluded sandy beach, just a short walk from the house. The beach is perfect for beach combing but if you want the surf then you need to visit the nearby impressive sands of Dunnet Bay.
The traditional Scottish Mansion House, recently awarded 5* by Visit Scotland, has been completely refurbished and upgraded to provide luxury accommodation which is welcoming and homely. The character of the classic 1800’s Scottish architecture has been retained while also providing modern comforts with the majority of bedrooms having en suite facilities. The house is able to accommodate up to 20 guests (Max 18 adults).
The setting makes a superb location for a memorable family or large group gathering. Bookings are accepted for 3 or 4 nights to full weeks and more, making it perfect for wedding parties as well; particularly with direct beach access and the surrounding 1800 acres of the owner’s heather clad estate along the dramatic cliff walks round to Dunnet Head lighthouse.
At the right time of year, you will have the chance to see puffins, arctic skuas, storm petrels, colonies of guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes & many more. At all times, if you keep your eyes peeled there is the opportunity to see dolphins and other Sealife including Sea Otters, Seals together with elusive Killer Whales or Minke Whales. Sea safaris can be booked at John O’Groats.
Caithness, with its wide-open skies is a stunning holiday location and to make the most of it you do need to get out and about either on the North Coast 500 with its many sites of interest or on foot or bike along quiet side roads and forest tracks. The area has long been a favourite with the Royal Family and it is reputed that while staying at the house the Queen Mother decided to buy the Castle of Mey after seeing it from her bedroom window, now known as the Mey bedroom; you can also search for the “Royal” picnic bench beside the peaceful River Thurso and “rest and be thankful” with Royal approval!
