Castle of Old Wick
Perched dramatically on a narrow sea cliff just south of Wick, the Castle of Old Wick is one of Scotland’s oldest castles. At a time when Norse influence shaped Caithness, this coastal stronghold may have served as Harald’s mainland seat.
Perched dramatically on a narrow sea cliff just south of Wick, the Castle of Old Wick is one of Scotland’s oldest castles. At a time when Norse influence shaped Caithness, this coastal stronghold may have served as Harald’s mainland seat.
The castle’s most striking feature is its tall, square tower, nicknamed the “Old Man of Wick”, which still stands four storeys high. Though much of the structure has collapsed, visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy sweeping views of the North Sea. The site’s remote beauty and rich history make it a rewarding stop for walkers, photographers, and history enthusiasts.
