Balnakeil Craft Village
Just a mile west of Durness, nestled beside the stunning Balnakeil Bay, lies Balnakeil Craft Village, one of the most unique and remote creative communities in the UK.
Originally built in the 1950s as a Cold War-era Ministry of Defence early warning station, the site was never commissioned. Instead, it found new life in the 1960s as a haven for artists, makers, and independent businesses.
Today, Balnakeil Craft Village is a vibrant hub of creativity, home to a diverse mix of residents and studios. Visitors can explore a treasure trove of local craftsmanship, from handmade chocolates and ceramics to woodwork, textiles, and fine art. The village is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic, locally made gifts and a glimpse into Highland life off the beaten path.
Set against a backdrop of dramatic coastal scenery, the village is also a short walk from Balnakeil Beach and the historic Balnakeil Church, making it a perfect stop on the North Coast 500 route.
