Achanlochy Clearance Village
Set on a quiet hillside above Lochan Duinte in Strathnaver, Achanlochy is one of the most poignant sites on the Strathnaver Trail.
Once home to seven crofting families, the village was cleared in 1819 during the Highland Clearances, when tenants were evicted to make way for sheep farming on the Sutherland Estates.
Today, visitors can explore the faint remains of homes, barns, and corn kilns, with interpretation boards offering insight into the lives once lived here. Though much of the site is covered in bracken, springtime reveals the layout more clearly. Achanlochy offers a quiet, reflective experience and a powerful connection to Scotland’s rural past.
