Niamh Ross of Highland Luxury Cottages shares the peace to be found in a secluded cabin, watching the changing winter skies.
When people arrive at Highland Luxury Cottages for the first time, they’re often surprised by just how hidden away we truly are. Our cottages sit just a mile from the village of Rogart in Sutherland – but once you’re here, you’d never know it. You turn off a single-track road, head up the hill, and then the whole landscape opens out. From the very top, you can see all the way to Ben More Assynt on the west coast.

Stay Among Wildlife in the Northern Scottish Highlands
Highland Luxury Cottages are part of our expansive working croft, and they fully embrace their surroundings. The lodges each sit within their own pocket of space, offering complete privacy and seclusion. Our sheep and cattle wander freely, and visitors love waking up to the sounds and sights of our livestock.
The diversity of wildlife is incredible, too. You can spot red kite, osprey, curlews, pheasant and even golden eagles flying overhead, and back on land there’s pine marten, rabbits and deer. Sometimes, a bold deer will come all the way up to the fence around the deck to have a nose at our guests!
The hot tubs are a favourite spot for watching all that activity. They face west, so you get that long, slow sweep of Highland light shifting across the hills.

Set your own Pace: Explore Scenic Walks and Trails on the NC500
Because we’re right in the middle of the NC500, many guests spend a week exploring somewhere new each day. Walkers return again and again. We’re spoilt for choice here, with the dramatic Big Burn Walk in Golspie being a big favourite, alongside the Loch Fleet nature reserve and the circuit taking in the historic area of Dornoch, its famous golf course and the sandy shore at Embo. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, Ben Bhraggie is well worth the exertion for the panoramic views at the top.
For mountain bikers, there’s the famous Highland Wildcat Trails as well as trails in Balbair Wood and Carbisdale Castle.
But even with all that choice, most people don’t try to cram it all in. The pleasure of visiting this part of the world is to simply slow down. Immerse yourself in the friendly community and live like locals.

Embrace the Magic of Winter in the North Highlands
Rogart is a beautiful place to visit year-round. In spring, the days stretch longer and the croft comes alive with lambs leaping across the fields. Yet autumn and winter bring a special kind of magic. Our inland location often means a generous blanket of snow, transforming the landscape into a wintry wonderland.
The community takes on new rhythms around winter. The days are short, and people love to come together for craft fairs, markets and concerts. It’s a time for hunkering indoors by a log fire, unwinding with a good book and savouring the peace.
Winter brings a different kind of beauty. The air turns crisp, and the colours shift through autumn golds to white, frosted hillsides. The Northern Lights put on the most spectacular show in the Highlands. Our secluded location tucked away in the heart of rural Sutherland offers sweeping views and no light pollution, so outside on the deck is the perfect viewing spot – or inside from the warmth of the cabin, with its full height windows.
