  • Lichen Caithness Reindeer Centre

Lichen Caithness Reindeer Centre

Lichen Caithness is home to the UK’s most Northerly Reindeer, and is definitely NOT just for kids! A unique experience in the North Highlands, we take visitors on a journey of discovery, sharing what makes Reindeer so special as a species, and their unique (often hilarious) characters. We offer visitors the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with these incredible animals. Pre-booking essential.

Lichen Caithness Reindeer Centre is proud to be home to the UK's most northerly Reindeer.

Almost twenty years since Chris and Elizabeth first had the idea of bringing Reindeer to Caithness, in February 2023 the team were delighted to welcome our reindeer calves Sven, Levvi and Mr Antlers to their purpose-built home in Harpsdale.

Reindeer Reception

Visit the boys on one of our ‘Reindeer Receptions’, where we'll welcome you into our Nordic Style Kota and share our passion for these incredible animals with an interactive presentation about what makes reindeer so unique, their history, habitat, diet and personalities, before heading into our paddock to meet the mischief makers first hand during one of their feeding sessions.

Here we will tell you a bit more about what makes our boys so well adapted to their native climate, and there will of course be the opportunity for photographs, as well as to test the herder’s knowledge with questions.

On leaving the enclosure, you'll enjoy a luxury hot chocolate, and toast marshmallows over our fire pit.

During the summer months the children can also enjoy our 'Meadow Maze' where they'll get the opportunity to win a wee Lichen Caithness badge (don't worry, you'll get one in the winter too!).

This experience is open all year, and look out for special seasonal events on our website: www.3reindeer.com, or our Facebook Page @Lichen Caithness.

Your Evening as a Reindeer Herder

New for the 2024 Season, the Team at Lichen Caithness Reindeer Centre have been working hard to offer guests something EVEN MORE personal.

Ideal for groups of adults, as well as inquisitive kids, if you're looking for a truly special evening experience, where your group are the ONLY guests, and where you'll really get to maximise your time with our Reindeer boys, then this experience is for you! You'll be learning all about these incredible animals both inside the enclosure, as well as outside in our Kota and around our Campfire, whilst we'll also enlist your help with their evening feeding time regime! And of course we'll keep you going with treats too!

Building on our extremely popular 'Reindeer Reception', experience, our 'Your Evening as a Reindeer Herder' offering takes all the best bits, and just adds MORE!

First up, as the name suggests, this experience is just for YOU!
A single ticket allows your group EXCLUSIVE access to this experience.
(Up to a maximum of 4 persons are included in the price - additional persons can be added on request at our usual price) This makes it a really relaxing way to enjoy your time with us here at the centre, and offers an incredibly personal way of experiencing these wonderful animals, and a wee taste of the team's life up here in the Highlands.

We start the experience by welcoming you into our Nordic Style Kota. Inspired by our trips to Lapland, that started this whole adventure for owners and hosts, Chris and Elizabeth over twenty years ago, here we share with you our passion (and addiction!) for these incredible animals. During an open and interactive presentation, we'll share with your group our own 'Lichen Caithness' story, and how the centre came to be here. We'll share what makes reindeer as a species so unique, their history here in the UK, tell you about habitat, diet and 'personalities', along with the story of our gorgeous boys, where they came from... and why!

From there, Chris and Elizabeth will take you out into our paddock to meet the mischief makers first hand, where you'll get the opportunity not only to feed them some of their favourite treats, but you'll also assist in the preparation and delivery of the most important meal of the day... Dinner. We'll also tell you lots more about what makes our boys so well adapted to their native climate, how we manage their health and wellbeing here at the Centre, and there will of course be the opportunity to take photographs, as well as to discuss with us anything you want to know about the boys, their journey, or ours!

When you're ready to leave the enclosure, we've got some savoury and sweet treats to help you get warmed up! Spiced, (or plain if you prefer) spiralised potato skewers and a luxury hot chocolate (or Tea / Coffee) can be enjoyed around our fire pit. And of course there are marshmallows to toast too! And if you're planning on making a night of it, why not check out our friends at 'The Ulbster Arms Hotel' for dinner? They're just five minutes up the road from the centre and serve delicious locally sourced evening meals (look them up - Booking is essential!).

This really is THE ULTIMATE 'Lichen Caithness' Experience.
