Staxigoe is a picturesque harbour which was once a busy port during the fishing boom of the 19th century. The harbour is depicted on the 1st edition OS map published in 1878.
Staxigoe Harbour was once the largest herring salting station in Europe but its fishing industry went into decline with the construction of a larger port in Wick. The name of the village is derived from two Norse words - "gja" or "geo" meaning an inlet and "stakkr" meaning a rock or stack.
