Donald Swanson was born at Geise Distillery about two miles from Thurso and went on to become one of Britain's best Victorian detectives. He grew up in Thurso's Durness Street attending the towns boy's school, the Miller Institution which now houses the public library. In 1867 he left Thurso for London and a year later he joined the Metropolitan Police. By 1888 he had risen to detective chief inspector, the year of the notorious Jack the Ripper murders.
