The village was planned by the Countess of Sutherland in c1815 as a centre for the newly established herring fishing industry. The streets running parallel to the river were given names from their Sutherland estates, e.g. Dunrobin, Sutherland and Strathnaver, while the streets running at right angles to the river were given names from their Stafford estates, Stittenham, Lilleshall, Trentham and Stafford. Some of the earliest houses in the village have a stone plaque with date and heraldic coat of arms of the Sutherland family. Timespan Museum and Arts Centre was formerly a curing yard where fish were salted, barrelled and exported from the harbour.
