This memorial garden was opened in August 2010 to remember those killed during the first daylight bombing raid in Britain on 1 July 1940; two months before the London Blitz began. The bomb fell during the school holidays when many children were outside playing in the street in the Bank Row area. Fifteen people were killed that day, including 8 children aged from 5 to 16, when a lone Junkers 88 bomber flew out of low cloud to attack Wick harbour dropping two bombs.
In October of the same year two children and a woman were killed in the Hill Street, close to the aerodrome at RAF Wick when three Heinkels dropped over 20 high-explosive bombs during an attack on the base.
The garden also commemorates the victims killed in the bombing at Hill Avenue on the north side of Wick which was bombed a year later; 6 people were killed, including 2 children.
