For over 100 years the herring girls were the backbone of the UK’s fishing industry. As one of the main herring fishing ports, Lybster has a deep connection to these girls. From the 21st of June until the 26th of July, we'll be celebrating their legacy and encouraging conversation, with a joint exhibition.
Following the Fish is a joint project run by High Life Highland’s Archive Service in partnership with Suffolk Archives, the Norfolk Record Office, and Tasglann nan Eilean (the Hebridean Archives) to capture the herring girls' stories.
Red Herring is a collaborative visual exhibition by artist Joanne Coates that interrogates women’s labour and class solidarity through the legacy of the Herring Girls—a migrant female workforce at the heart of the fishing industry between the 18th and 20th centuries
Open Wed - Sat, 10am - 3pm at Waterlines, Lybster.
