DESCRIPTION:Caithness Show is a traditional agricultural event that has become a great day out for all the family. With livestock classes\, driving turnouts\, show jumping classes\, poultry and wildfowl\, classes for young exhibitors\, Young Farmers Calf Competition\, Dog Show\, Main Ring entertainment and procession of vintage tractors. Along with industrial and flower sections such as: baking\, crafts\, creative and flowers. The Northern Quality Produce Marquee offers a fantastic shopping opportunity and showcases the best food\, drink and artisan crafts in Caithness\, as well as welcoming visitors from further afield. A diverse range of vendors make up the outdoor Trade Stand area\, with stands selling everything from agricultural machinery to toys and artwork\, as well as many informational exhibitors. The show day is rounded off with a buffet dance held in a town centre venue.

DESCRIPTION:Joanne Coates\, Red Herring \nOpen everyday 10am-4pm \nFree Exhibition on view until 30th September \nWe are excited to present a new exhibition by visual artist Joanne Coates. Red Herring explores the overlooked histories of women’s labour and class solidarity through the legacy of the Herring Girls—an itinerant all-female workforce central to the fishing industry between the 18th and 20th centuries. Developed during a six-month residency at Timespan in Helmsdale\, the project is grounded in archival research\, community collaboration and Coates’ lived experience as a working-class artist. \nRed Herring brings to light the stories of the Herring Girls—also known as Gutting Girls or Herring Lasses—who travelled seasonally to coastal towns gutting and packing fish. Often underpaid\, injured\, and working in harsh conditions\, these women formed complex communities that carved out independence in a male-dominated public space. A key moment of collective resistance—the 1936 Great Yarmouth strike—is highlighted in the exhibition as an overlooked instance of working-class protofeminist organising. \nThe exhibition’s central photographic series sees Coates reenacting the gestures\, routines\, and acts of care that defined the Gutting Girls’ daily lives\, using her own body as a site of inquiry. These coexist with archival photos from Timespan and Shetland Museum and Archives collections to re-examine historical imagery of the gutting girls—not simply as documentary evidence but as constructed representations. As historical photography often framed rural working-class women as passive and content\, it fed into gendered representations of class that persist today. Coates disrupts these representations\, instead presenting working-class women’s labour as an active and complex struggle in the series Labour Pains (2025)\, Submerge (2024)\, Trajicere (2024)\, and Involvo (2024). \nSituated in Helmsdale\, a village historically shaped by the Highland Clearances and the transatlantic herring trade\, the exhibition explores how local histories connect to global systems of colonialism and labour extraction. Coates expands this analysis by including photographs from the State Archives of North Carolina\, drawing transatlantic parallels between racialised labour in fish processing and Scottish herring workers. \n \nThe exhibition presents another new commission\, Herring Crown (2025) created in collaboration with Helmsdale Primary School. This sculptural work reimagines the tradition of crowning a Herring Queen to celebrate women’s labour. Visitors will be invited to wear the crown and have their portrait taken by the artist during public sessions on 20th–22nd June 2025 as part of the Salt & Silver symposium and during the Herring Crown Parade on 16 August 2025. These portraits will form part of a living archive of Helmsdale’s residents and visitors. \nRed Herring highlights the long-overlooked contributions of working-class women’s labour. It invites us to reconsider how these stories have been told\, recognise their significance\, and reflect on the persistent impact of class and gender inequality in shaping the world women live in today. \nCurated by Giulia Gregnanin\, supported by Creative Scotland\, The Highland Council Ward Discretionary Fund\, and the Foyle Foundation.

SUMMARY:Seabird Spectacular!
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to see Puffins and other seabirds? Join me on this 3 to 4 mile hike (between 1 and a half and 2 miles EACH WAY) across moor and bog to a most spectacular coastline\, with 60 m (190 feet)-high cliffs covered with nesting seabirds. Experience the sights\, sounds AND SMELLS of one of nature’s most enthralling habitats – the seabird equivalent of high-rise tower-blocks. \n \nFor just 14 weeks each spring/summer\, Kittiwakes\, Fulmars\, Guillemots\, Razorbills\, Puffins and Shags fill every available ledge\, nook and cranny of these cliffs with the sole aim of raising a family. The cacophony of sound they produce is almost deafening! The sights are unforgettable. As is the stench of guano. If you haven’t experienced it\, then you haven’t lived! You’ll either love it or you’ll hate it\, as with Marmite. I love them both… \nIn addition to the breeding birds\, there’ll be frequent visits by predators seeking to take an egg\, or a chick\, or even an adult bird\, for dinner. The main predators are Sea Eagle\, Great Skua (‘Bonxie’)\, Great Black-backed Gull and Raven\, although Herring Gulls are a formidable foe too. \nThe fledging of young Guillemots and Razorbills in July is spectacular. One-third grown\, they’re encouraged by their parents to leap from the ledge and — despite frantic flapping of stubby wings — they plunge down to the sea. One parent will descend with each chick. If all goes well\, dad will accompany it away from the hectic sea cliff and out into the open water\, where it will eventually mature and become independent. Mum\, meanwhile\, will defend the nest site for a few days from inquisitive sub-adult birds looking for a site of their own. Once found\, they’ll try to keep ownership of it for 20 years! \nBy late July\, most are done… an eerie silence befalls all areas of Britain’s wild rocky coastline\, as these seabirds go to where they’re in their element — in the open ocean. Believe it or not the adult birds are generally safer out there too\, even in winter storms. \nThe route across the heath and bog (with beautiful plants!) should bring views of Red Grouse\, Skylark\, Meadow Pipit\, and Red Deer. Spectacular Orkney appears as we near the cliffs. \nThere are some wet areas to traverse\, so walking boots and gaiters – or even Wellington boots – are recommended. The route has some undulating terrain and some tussocky vegetation too\, but is only moderately difficult. Walking poles will require a broad base\, not a spike! Three to four miles in total\, depending upon the route taken. Worth every footstep. \nMeeting point (and car parking): contact me on the day\, but it will be in the vicinity of Melvich.
