DESCRIPTION:Clay slab workshop\, inspired by the landscapes & elements of the North West Highlands.\n\n\n\nResident artist\, Martina Macleod\, from Mudness Ceramics will guide you through a slab building session to create a vase or vessel\, with a unique design inspired by the landscapes and elements of the North West Highlands.The session will include working on the clay surface and imprinting patterns to create a unique design of your choosing. The finished piece will then be fired for you after drying. \nThere will be two sessions\, from 10am to 12.30pm and then from 1.30pm to 4pm. Both sessions are open to all\, free to attend but places are limited\, so please book your place.  All materials are included. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. \nThis workshop is one of a series being delivered across the North West Highlands Geopark and its Gateway areas. DESCRIPTION:For anyone interested in Gaelic\, a whole day of workshops with a wide variety of activities to suit all ages has been organised for next month. All sessions will be held largely through the medium of Gaelic\, but due to the practical nature of these they are suitable for complete beginners up to fluent speakers.\n\n\nDAYTIME WORKSHOPS:\n\n\nLeugh is Seinn Le Linda: \n\n\nLinda\, a Gaelic singer\, has been running Gaelic sessions for babies and younger children for years. She is the perfect person to introduce wee ones and their parents/carers to Gaelic through songs and stories using actions and puppets.\n\n\nLinda will do sessions for two age groups: 0-5 years and parents/carers and P1-P3.\n\n\nYou can sample some of Linda’s sessions online by searching YouTube for Leugh is Seinn le Linda.\n\n\nSpòrs Gàidhlig \n\n\nSpòrs Gàidhlig\, who specialise in Gaelic outdoor activities for youngsters\, will hold an orienteering session for children in P4-S3.\n\n\nIn addition to this there will be a giant Gaelic map jigsaw (almost the size of Lairg Hall!) for this age group to complete in the hall. There is an annual Gaelic filmmaking competition – Film G – and this could be helpful to anyone wanting to take part in it.\n\n\n\n\n\nAdult Gaelic workshops: \n\n\nThere will be beginner\, intermediate and advanced workshops.\n\n\n\n\n\nSongs from East Sutherland (Cataibh) workshop with Duncan Macleod: \n\n\nThis workshop will be based on 2 local songs from the singing of Kate Ross\, Lairg. Anyone who has previously learned these songs is very welcome to come back for a refresher. Open to all levels of Gaelic/singing ability. Adults and accompanied children.\n\n\n\n\n\nSong workshop with Lisa MacDonald: \n\n\nLisa\, conductor of Coisir Ghaidhlig An Iar Thuath\, will lead a song session focusing on one Mackay Country (Dùthaich ‘icAoidh) song and a selection of others. Our annual dinner will be hosted at the Ulbster Arms Hotel on Sunday 11th January – Enjoy a 3 course meal while listening to tales of the River Thurso & meeting new friends. \nThe next morning (Monday 12th January 2026) join us at the Ulbster Arms Hotel to begin our walk down to the river\, where we will bless the river & our guest of honour will make the first cast to officially open the River Thurso for the season ahead. \nWarm up back at the Ulbster Arms Hotel with a cup of tea & bacon roll to finish off the day and have a chat with the local anglers. \nPlease note: The River Thurso season begins on the 11th January every year\, however due to the 11th falling on a Sunday\, on this occasion (2026) we will be holding the opening cast on Monday 12th January 2026\, with the meal falling the day before – The opening cast will resume on the 11th the following year.
