SUMMARY:Salt to Plate by Debasis Biswas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the heritage and conservation of salmon fisheries along the north coast of Scotland and beyond with local wildlife artist and documentary filmmaker Debasis Biswas. DB’s fascinating co-curated exhibition incorporates paintings\, sculptural pieces and a documentary film. \nThe story of the salmon fisheries is a human story of industry and resilience and DB has gathered a wealth of colourful and rich stories from those who worked these shores as part of what was once a thriving industry. DB’s engaging documentary incorporates these stories as he visits the buildings associated with the industry in the company of those who worked there. \nDB also explores the global story of the wild Atlantic salmon through art and science. The students at Farr High School led by High Life Highland Ranger Paul Castle explored the impact of micro plastics and marine litter on our environment during a litter pick. The students creative responses can be seen as part of the exhibition through sculptural pieces created by the waste gathered during their litter pick. \nSalt to Plate was developed as part of Strathnaver Museum’s 2024 Artist Residency Programme part funded by Museums Galleries Scotland\, The William Syson Foundation\, the Children’s and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund\, and which received £5\,755 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. \n20th June to 31st October\, Mon to Sat\, 10am to 5pm

SUMMARY:Salt and Hearth
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a group of artists spends five days on a remote\, abandoned island with no electricity? \nSalt and Hearth brings together the work of seven artists following a creative residency on the island of Stroma. Living simply\, they cooked on an old kitchen stove\, shared stories by candlelight\, explored the island’s landscape\, and responded through drawing\, painting\, printmaking and mixed media. \nInspired by salt\, weather\, memory\, and the enduring presence of the women who once called Stroma home\, each artist offers a unique perspective on this remarkable place while reflecting on a shared experience of creativity\, community and island life. \nFeaturing work by Aileen Paton\, Caroline Swan\, Shelagh Swanson\, Jacqui Higgs\, Elizabeth Henderson\, Sandie Beck and Nichola Beckett. \nSee North Coast Visitor Center website for infomation on opening hours.

SUMMARY:White Ground\, Black Water
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr Cat Dunn\nWith Alberta Whittle\, Graham Fagen\, Matthew Arthur Williams\, and Tilda Williams Kelly\nOpening: 1st August 2026 \nWhite Ground\, Black Water is a research-led exhibition curated by Dr Cat Dunn\, examining Scotland’s role in Empire\, specifically its deep-rooted but often overlooked entanglements with the Caribbean\, and the complex legacies of displacement\, racial capitalism\, and historical erasure that continue to shape both places today. \nScotland’s extensive participation in the transatlantic slave economy and the management of Caribbean colonies has been marginalised within mainstream historical discourse. Wealth generated from sugar plantations\, enslavement\, and colonial administration flowed back into Scottish society\, funding universities\, landholdings\, and cultural institutions. \nOpening in August 2026\, the exhibition will feature work by Alberta Whittle\, Graham Fagen\, Matthew Arthur Williams\, and Tilda Williams Kelly. Working across video\, performance\, installation\, photography\, and sculpture\, the artists offer ways of seeing that disrupt official histories and invite more nuanced\, embodied understandings of place and power. \nPROGRAMME OF EVENTS\nThe exhibition is accompanied by a public programme curated by Dr Cat Dunn\, beginning with an anchor event designed to ground the research locally\, centre community dialogue\, and build critical context ahead of the exhibition opening. These events mark the start of a longer process of collective enquiry.

SUMMARY:Gary Innes & Ewen Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Two of the Highlands’ most respected and well-loved musicians\, Gary Innes and Ewan Henderson\, bring their fiddle and accordian due to Dornoch Cathedral. They will be joined by special guest Rory Matheson on piano\, and supported by local fiddle and guitar duo Ruairidh Mackay and Megan MacKay \nFrom their earliest days playing at dances and weddings throughout the Highlands\, to performing all across the globe with Mànran\, Gary and Ewen have become leading figures in the Scottish traditional music scene. Their duo performances have taken them to corners as far-flung as Kazakhstan and Shanghai\, not to mention once tourin the entire West Coast of the United States in a convertible Mustang… \nIndeed\, it is from these adventures – plus the musical heritage of their Lochaber upbringing – that their music and stories spring. \nGet tickets

SUMMARY:An evening with Sean Kelly - Orthopaedic Surgeon
DESCRIPTION:After 35 years as a local public sector NHS Orthopaedic surgeon\, Sean retired two years ago from his Highland clinical practice. Since that time\, he has linked with Scottish colleagues and local Zambian surgeons to work with a pro bono Orthopaedic charity based in Zambia called Flyspec. \nThere is a huge unmet need for Orthopaedic treatments in Zambia. This is particularly important for ensuring surgical care is accessible in remote & rural communities. Access is often difficult and facilitated by small\, fixed-wing aircraft\, thus enabling vital life-changing operations to be available to those patients living outside the capital city\, Lusaka. \nThe original pioneering vision of the charity has flourished and survived the test of time despite the austere environmental and economic challenges. Recurrent emphasis on the need for local surgical leadership and the passing on of practical knowledge to local surgeons has been fundamental to that mission. \nJoin Sean at the Dornoch Cathedral to hear more of his life and work with the Flyspec. \nBuy tickets at Dornoch Gatherings.
