SUMMARY:Making with the Shore: Between Two Beaches
DESCRIPTION:Join artists Lisa Poulsen and Joanne B Kaar for a relaxed afternoon of hands-on making inspired by the shoreline\, seaweeds and coastal landscapes around Dunnet Bay. \nMindful Mark Making with Lisa Poulsen\nLisa will lead a gentle\, sensory mark-making workshop inspired by her High Tides and Art Vibes practice. Using simple materials and prompts drawn from the coast\, this session encourages slowing down\, observing\, and responding creatively to place. \nSeaweed Monoprints with Joanne B Kaar\nGet inky and print your own seaweed picture. Taking inspiration from the many shapes of seaweeds on our shores\, we will use the printmaking technique of direct line monotype to make new artwork. You can draw your own or use images of seaweeds to trace around.  Suitable for primary school age children and families\, there will be a variety of papers and inks to use. Slightly sticky\, we will carefully wrap your prints to take home to let them dry. \nAll materials are provided. \nThis informal\, family friendly drop-in session is suitable for all ages and invites participants to explore mark-making\, texture and colour using natural forms from the shore. People are welcome to move between activities\, take their time\, and stay for as long or as little as they like during the afternoon.

SUMMARY:The Living Camera 16mm Film Phytogram Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable 16mm camera-less Workshop with Chloe Charlton & Jess Holdengarde \nThis workshop offers an introduction to plant-based film chemistry and cameraless filmmaking using the phytogram method*—a technique in which organic matter leaves a direct trace on light-sensitive materials. For this workshop\, participants will work specifically with 16mm film. \nWorking collectively\, participants will produce an abstract\, earthy film using plants gathered around Lyth Arts Centre. Foraged material will be used to both imprint images directly onto the film strip\, as well as form the plant-based chemistry used in the hand-processing. The film will be screened on Sunday as part of Between Two Beaches closing event\, alongside a Q&A with the artists behind the project\, Jess Holdengarde and Chloe Charlton. \nThis session builds upon the processes and techniques developed in the first phase of the Living Camera project that took place in 2025. The Living Camera is a collaborative\, site-specific analogue project that brings together camera obscura\, darkroom practice\, moving image\, and plant-based photographic chemistry. The project continues to evolve through collaboration\, ecological processes\, and slow\, site-responsive image-making\, with further development and events unfolding throughout 2026. \n*The phytogram method was developed by filmmaker Karel Doing. \nThis workshop is aimed at all ages from 14+. Please note: this is a guide\, if young people are below this age guidance but have a strong interest in the workshop please get in touch.

SUMMARY:kar by Alex Sarkisian
DESCRIPTION:kar (Քար\, meaning “stone”) is an exhibition and film work by Alex Sarkisian that traces the delicate survival of Western Armenian ancestral places. Moving across the Armenian Highlands through monasteries\, cities and landscapes now within the coercive border of Turkey and left to ruin\, the film gathers the slow violence of erasure: storms\, earthquakes\, military occupation\, theft\, and neglect. These sites\, once vital to Armenian cultural and spiritual life\, are today marked by deliberate abandonment and destruction by the Turkish state. \nThe film follows the filmmaker and their father on a return to Kharpert\, their ancestral home\, visited for the first time since the Armenian Genocide. This intergenerational journey carries the weight of loss and the persistence of memory\, holding together the impossibility of preservation with the urgency of witnessing. \nThe gallery is open during museum opening hours. Find Timespan’s Opening hours on their website. \nkar runs from 23 November 2025 to 1 March 2026.

SUMMARY:Surf Films & Shoreline Stories
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed afternoon screening featuring surf films from Scotland and afar. \nWe will also screen the final film Collecting Light created by participants in our ‘The Living Camera’ project and will have a final closing discussion with artists Jess Holdengrade and Chloe Charlton. Film details below… \nCollecting Light documents the first workshops with The Living Camera project which took place at Lyth Arts Centre with its youth community in 2025. Shot on 16mm\, the film follows a collaborative analogue workshop centred around the site-specific camera obscura\, which transforms into a darkroom and gathering space. Participants are seen constructing pinhole cameras\, foraging local plants and inhabiting the obscura. The film documents how collective and regenerative image-making can support new ways of seeing\, living\, and learning – offering creative tools for the challenges of our time. \nCollecting Light was developed with the same eco-chemistry that was collectively brewed during the workshop – embedding place\, process\, and shared making into its images. \nDuration: 12min

These are: \nAt Home in Mackay Country exploring\, celebrating and sharing our intangible cultural heritage connected to land and land use from stories\, songs to crofting. The project has been made possible with funding from Protection through Connection funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nGrace our community boat build has been supported through the National Lottery Awards for All to support the team to purchase vital safety equipment. \nJoin us to find out more about these projects and discover what’s new for 2026 as we celebrate what’s been achieved over the last 50 years and what the next might hold.

SUMMARY:As Long As it Yields
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Scotland by Venezuelan artist José García Oliva\, As Long As It Yields presents a new body of work examining mechanisms of agricultural and labour extraction sustained by overseas seasonal worker schemes and land exploitation\, operating within systems of deferred responsibility. \nThis framework is set in contrast to romanticised notions of the rural landscape as an idyllic and picturesque paradise of pastoral abundance. This work emerges from conversations\, gatherings\, and drawings developed in collaboration with agricultural workers supported by the Worker Support Centre and the Justice Is Not Seasonal campaign. \n\n\nJosé García Oliva is a Venezuelan artist living and working in London. His practice focuses on outsourcing systems\, migrant labour\, and the hierarchies that sculpt everyday urban life\, interrogating how these structures are experienced\, negotiated\, and reproduced within shared social spaces. He works through long-term collaborations that prioritise co-authorship and ongoing relationships\, shaping how the work is made\, shown\, and circulated. His projects often unfold through enacted social exchanges or site-responsive provocations\, taking the form of performances\, drawings\, sculptures\, and public interventions. \n\n\nRecent exhibitions and commissions include Welcome isn’t a Doormat (Metal Culture)\, Tonada de Galopeo (Abra\, Venezuela)\, I’m listening to what you’re not saying and it’s very loud (V&A)\, Out of Hours (Lancaster Arts)\, and How May I Serve You? (Axisweb\, ACE and SET Studios)\, alongside residencies at Gasworks\, Casa Wabi\, Hospitalfield\, and SOMA. His awards include the UK Ibero-American Visual Art Prize (2021)\, The Augustus Martin Prize (2020)\, and Image of the Year awarded by Bozar\, Brussels (2020). Oliva graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2020 and is currently a lecturer at Central Saint Martins.
