SUMMARY:Birdwatching on the RSPB’s Forsinain Trail\, Forsinard Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Birdwatching on the RSPB’s Forsinain Trail\, Forsinard Nature Reserve with Graham Thompson\, A Far North Naturalist \nCovering a variety of habitats – river\, farm\, moor\, dubh lochan\, bog and conifer plantation – this walk SHOULD bring a variety of birds. \n\n\n\nIncorporating a trail at my former workplace (RSPB Forsinard)\, which includes areas of ‘forest-to-bog’ restoration work that I was involved in. \nThis route is 6.4 km (4 miles) in length. There are some moderately difficult slopes to climb/descend. The trail is likely to be wet in places\, so suitable footwear is required. \nThis is a 4 1/2 to 5 hour walk approximately\, so bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink! \nCovering a variety of habitats – river\, farm\, moor\, dubh lochan\, bog and conifer plantation – this walk SHOULD bring a good variety of birds (nothing guaranteed!)\, namely: Common Sandpiper\, Greenshank\, Golden Plover (pictured)\, Lapwing\, Snipe\, Oystercatcher\, Curlew\, Greylag Goose\, Hen Harrier\, Cuckoo\, Stonechat\, Linnet\, Crossbill\, Redpoll\, Siskin\, Goldcrest\, Blue Tit\, Great Tit\, Coal Tit\, Long-tailed Tit\, Dipper\, Sky Lark\, Meadow Pipit\, Pied Wagtail\, Grey Wagtail\, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush. There’s also a chance of Dunlin and Red-throated Diver. Quail has occasionally appeared here in May in the past\, Grasshopper Warbler too\, more frequently (both species are more likely to be heard than seen!). Seeing Red Deer is possible. \nIn addition to birds\, the bog pools will have floristic interest: the spectacular Bogbean should be flowering. Four-spot Chaser dragonflies (photo) should be on the wing. The results of the forest-to-bog restoration work is also interesting to see.\nCar parking at Forsinain next to the Halladale River here: w3w///pulsing.dwarves.bandwagon. NC90364855 \nIf there are ANY species you’d particularly like to see\, that perhaps don’t feature on this walk\, I am available for hire and could concentrate on finding it/them with you \nDiscover more and sign up via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Orca Watch
DESCRIPTION:Orca Watch is an annual citizen science event organised by the Sea Watch Foundation\, where volunteers and scientists collaborate to observe and record sightings of orcas and other cetaceans around the coast of northern Scotland. This event raises awareness of cetacean conservation and contributes to scientific research on their movements\, behaviour\, and population trends. \nOrca Watch primarily takes place along the northern coast of Scotland\, particularly around the Pentland Firth\, which is a key area for observing orcas during their seasonal movements closer to shore.  These areas are important for tracking the movement of orcas as they hunt seals and follow other prey along the coastlines of northern Scotland. \nThe ‘Orca Hub’ is situated in John o’ Groats\, with information and merchandise available inside. \nFind out more about Orca Watch events here.

SUMMARY:Earth Mind Geotour
DESCRIPTION:After the success of the inaugural Earth Mind Geotour in 2025\, dates have already been confirmed for a 2026 tour! A sensory and creative journey of self-discovery around sites of geological interest\, led by psychotherapist and geologist Ruth Allen\, and author and geologist John McLellan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her book Weathering\, author\, psychotherapist and geologist Ruth Allen explores geological processes as a metaphor for human life and experience. In this first-of-a-kind workshop\, in the beautiful wilds of the NW Highlands\, Ruth will take you on a sensory and creative journey of self-discovery around sites of geological interest where you will have the chance to learn about this stunning part of the world\, and connect deeply with yourself and the landscape around you\, inspired by some of the oldest rocks in Europe. \nTogether we will consider our relationship with deep and dynamic time\, connect with themes of resilience and resourcing for the pressurised lives we live\, spend nourishing time learning to listen to the slow world of rock\, and plenty more besides. \nThis is a chance to ground; to deepen rather than widen\, and take the time you need for space and contemplation in ancient landscapes that have the power to connect us to both stillness and aliveness.Though we will move around different locations together\, getting to know the rocks and each other along the way\, you will be invited through facilitated exercises and prompts to take the time you need to connect with yourself in order to ask yourself (and perhaps start to answer) the questions we often don’t have time for in the rush of our day-to-day lives. For example\, What do I want and need more of in my life? What matters to me? In what ways do I need to look after myself differently? \nWhether you are in particular need of some time spent in solitude\, if you have a curiosity or draw to geological landscapes\, or you are looking for new ways to deepen your relationship with the natural world for your health and wellbeing\, this workshop will offer you creative space to engage with the world around you a little differently and help you make the geological\, personal. You do not need to have any prior experience\, or any particular fitness level. Just an openness to meeting and listening to yourself and the world around you. \n\nMonday 4th May – 7.00pm – 8.30pm. Meet the team. An introduction to methodology plus any Q & A.\nTuesday 5th May\, Wednesday 6th May and Thursday 7th May will be half day excursions visiting various locations such as Knockan Crag and Inchnadamph\, Achmelvich and Clachtoll with a lunch break at the Rock Stop.\nTwo optional evening sessions are also being considered – Authors event on Wed 6th (with John McLellan and Ruth Allen) and a final evening event.\n\nWhat you will need to bring (in addition to usual all-weather gear): \n\nNotebook\, pens and/or drawing materials\nSomething portable to sit (or lie!) on – sit mats\, small portable chair etc

SUMMARY:Flow Country Guided Walk with A Far North Naturalist
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a gentle stroll on the RSPB’s Forsinard Flows nature reserve to discover the splendid peatland habitat with its World Heritage Site designation\, all from the comfort of a boardwalk and flagstone trail. \nPrepare to be shocked at how deep the peat is! Do you dare to bounce on it with me? Explore the many pools (with a pond net) and discover what lurks there. \nClimb the observation tower for spectacular views. Learn about the special peatland birds and plants and marvel at the landscape as we look across the Ben Griams Site of Special Scientific Interest. Hear about some of its secrets. Watch out for eagles and bog wading birds. \nA Far North Naturalist Tour \nThis walk fits in with train arrivals and departures from north and south\, so why not let the train take the strain? Meeting at Forsinard Train Station. \nProper outdoor clothing is recommended in case of inclement weather. The trail might be wet in places\, so do wear walking boots or wellingtons. \nNot suitable for dogs.

SUMMARY:The Living Camera 16mm Film Phytogram Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable 16mm camera-less Workshop with Chloe Charlton & Jess Holdengarde \nThis workshop offers an introduction to plant-based film chemistry and cameraless filmmaking using the phytogram method*—a technique in which organic matter leaves a direct trace on light-sensitive materials. For this workshop\, participants will work specifically with 16mm film. \nWorking collectively\, participants will produce an abstract\, earthy film using plants gathered around Lyth Arts Centre. Foraged material will be used to both imprint images directly onto the film strip\, as well as form the plant-based chemistry used in the hand-processing. The film will be screened on Sunday as part of Between Two Beaches closing event\, alongside a Q&A with the artists behind the project\, Jess Holdengarde and Chloe Charlton. \nThis session builds upon the processes and techniques developed in the first phase of the Living Camera project that took place in 2025. The Living Camera is a collaborative\, site-specific analogue project that brings together camera obscura\, darkroom practice\, moving image\, and plant-based photographic chemistry. The project continues to evolve through collaboration\, ecological processes\, and slow\, site-responsive image-making\, with further development and events unfolding throughout 2026. \n*The phytogram method was developed by filmmaker Karel Doing. \nThis workshop is aimed at all ages from 14+. Please note: this is a guide\, if young people are below this age guidance but have a strong interest in the workshop please get in touch.
