There are few guitarists in this country able to so intricately guide a set with melody and rhythm.” – The National \n“Her By Design is an exceptional album and as a debut it’s a masterpiece. Turn up the volume and luxuriate in the singing and the sound.” – folking.com

SUMMARY:Species on the Edge Exhibition Launch
DESCRIPTION:Species on the Edge \nSpecies on the Edge celebrates the end of its four-year programme of conservation with an exhibition inspired by the people\, flora\, and fauna of the north coast. \nCreative practices have been valuable for Species on the Edge in opening up conversations about conservation. The exhibition brings together the work of artists and community groups who have contributed to the project in different ways\, in different places and at different times. \nIt features work by stained glass artist Marta Sienkiewicz\, comic illustrator Aimee Lockwood\, watercolour painter Iris Hill\, filmmakers Laura O’Kane and Sinéad Hargan\, the Sutherland Stitchers\, and an herbarium produced by Tongue Gardening Group supported by Joanne B Kaar. \nPeople will be inspired by this co-curated collection\, understanding conservation action not just as surveying or habitat management\, but as a process of creating joy and hope. \nSpecies on the Edge is a collaboration of eight conservation organisations\, working with communities across Scotland’s coasts and islands to save our rarest and most vulnerable species from extinction. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, Species on the Edge works hand-in-hand with communities and landowners across Scotland to bring together expertise and resources from across the conservation sector to tackle biodiversity loss.

SUMMARY:Auchies Spikkin’ Auchie - Grace Skinner
DESCRIPTION:Auchies Spikkin’ Auchieis an innovative\, moving and beautiful celebration of the unique language\, stories and fishing heritage of Avoch on the Black Isle. \nClàrsach player\, composer and ethnologist Grace Stewart-Skinner intertwines field recordings of Avoch locals speaking the village’s distinctive Avochie dialect with her own original compositions\, creating what she describes as an“ethnomusicological postcard”of her home village \nThe project began when Grace rediscovered an old recording of her grandfather reciting his own poetry in Avochie. Finding little trace of the dialect preserved in archives\, she began recording local people herself — capturing their voices\, stories and a language closely connected to generations of Avoch’s fishing community \nFor the live performance\, Grace is joined by Rose Logan on fiddle\, Rhona MacDonald on double bass and Ewa Adamiec on drums/percussion\, with film of the Avoch landscape by Michiel Turner accompanying the music. \nThe resulting performance brings together music\, spoken word\, archive and film\, celebrating a remarkable piece of Highland cultural heritage while exploring what can be lost as communities\, industries and languages change. \nThe album has received considerable recognition: it was shortlisted for the Sound Roots Folk Album of the Year Award\, shortlisted for Community Project of the Year at the Scots Language Awards\, and won Innovative Project of the Year at the FATEA Magazine Awards.
