SUMMARY:Salt and Hearth
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a group of artists spends five days on a remote\, abandoned island with no electricity? \nSalt and Hearth brings together the work of seven artists following a creative residency on the island of Stroma. Living simply\, they cooked on an old kitchen stove\, shared stories by candlelight\, explored the island’s landscape\, and responded through drawing\, painting\, printmaking and mixed media. \nInspired by salt\, weather\, memory\, and the enduring presence of the women who once called Stroma home\, each artist offers a unique perspective on this remarkable place while reflecting on a shared experience of creativity\, community and island life. \nFeaturing work by Aileen Paton\, Caroline Swan\, Shelagh Swanson\, Jacqui Higgs\, Elizabeth Henderson\, Sandie Beck and Nichola Beckett. \nSee North Coast Visitor Center website for infomation on opening hours.

SUMMARY:Gary Innes & Ewen Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Two of the Highlands’ most respected and well-loved musicians\, Gary Innes and Ewan Henderson\, bring their fiddle and accordian due to Dornoch Cathedral. They will be joined by special guest Rory Matheson on piano\, and supported by local fiddle and guitar duo Ruairidh Mackay and Megan MacKay \nFrom their earliest days playing at dances and weddings throughout the Highlands\, to performing all across the globe with Mànran\, Gary and Ewen have become leading figures in the Scottish traditional music scene. Their duo performances have taken them to corners as far-flung as Kazakhstan and Shanghai\, not to mention once tourin the entire West Coast of the United States in a convertible Mustang… \nIndeed\, it is from these adventures – plus the musical heritage of their Lochaber upbringing – that their music and stories spring. \nGet tickets

SUMMARY:Faoinsgeul Loch Maruibhe - The Legend of Loch Maree and Claire Frances MacNeil
DESCRIPTION:  \nFaoinsgeul Loch Maruibhe\, The Legend of Loch Maree\, is the Blas 2026 commission by leading Highland fiddle player Graham MacKenzie. The work is inspired by a print by the late Margaret Robertson\, which hung in the home where Graham grew up and first introduced him to the story. \nRobertson’s image depicts the Legend of Loch Maree: a tragic Highland tale of a local princess who falls in love with Olaf\, a Norwegian prince. With its themes of love\, misunderstanding and loss\, the story is often described as a Highland echo of Romeo and Juliet. \nThe newly composed music and traditional songs will represent the themes of loyalty\, love\, longing\, bravery\, betrayal and mystery.

SUMMARY:Kenny's Ceilidh
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Mackenzie has inspired many Sutherland youngsters to engage with music\, and with Gaelic song in particular. For more than three quarters of a century he has enjoyed attending Mòds as a competitor\, a choir conductor and as an audience member. His journey with Gaelic choirs travelled full circle from a young chorister under the teaching of his headmaster Angus M Ross (Rossie) to conducting that same choir during his own years as headmaster at Lochinver Primary School. \nDuring his young adulthood he sang with his brother\, Rod and his own late wife\, Marlene\, and sister-in-law Joan and Marlene and Kenny continued to sing together at many concerts and cèilidhs throughout the region. Their close harmony singing inspired local youngsters and family visiting Achiltibuie and Lochinver where Mackenzie house cèilidhs were a welcome occurrence. \nIn this cèilidh celebrating his years of involvement with Gaelic music his legacy will be showcased by former pupils\, among them Mòd Gold medallists\, James Graham and Duncan Macleod\, Rory Matheson\, Rona MacLeod\, his nieces Eilidh and Fiona Mackenzie as well as extended family.
