SUMMARY:Salt to Plate by Debasis Biswas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the heritage and conservation of salmon fisheries along the north coast of Scotland and beyond with local wildlife artist and documentary filmmaker Debasis Biswas. DB’s fascinating co-curated exhibition incorporates paintings\, sculptural pieces and a documentary film. \nThe story of the salmon fisheries is a human story of industry and resilience and DB has gathered a wealth of colourful and rich stories from those who worked these shores as part of what was once a thriving industry. DB’s engaging documentary incorporates these stories as he visits the buildings associated with the industry in the company of those who worked there. \nDB also explores the global story of the wild Atlantic salmon through art and science. The students at Farr High School led by High Life Highland Ranger Paul Castle explored the impact of micro plastics and marine litter on our environment during a litter pick. The students creative responses can be seen as part of the exhibition through sculptural pieces created by the waste gathered during their litter pick. \nSalt to Plate was developed as part of Strathnaver Museum’s 2024 Artist Residency Programme part funded by Museums Galleries Scotland\, The William Syson Foundation\, the Children’s and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund\, and which received £5\,755 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. \n20th June to 31st October\, Mon to Sat\, 10am to 5pm

SUMMARY:White Ground\, Black Water
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr Cat Dunn\nWith Alberta Whittle\, Graham Fagen\, Matthew Arthur Williams\, and Tilda Williams Kelly\nOpening: 1st August 2026 \nWhite Ground\, Black Water is a research-led exhibition curated by Dr Cat Dunn\, examining Scotland’s role in Empire\, specifically its deep-rooted but often overlooked entanglements with the Caribbean\, and the complex legacies of displacement\, racial capitalism\, and historical erasure that continue to shape both places today. \nScotland’s extensive participation in the transatlantic slave economy and the management of Caribbean colonies has been marginalised within mainstream historical discourse. Wealth generated from sugar plantations\, enslavement\, and colonial administration flowed back into Scottish society\, funding universities\, landholdings\, and cultural institutions. \nOpening in August 2026\, the exhibition will feature work by Alberta Whittle\, Graham Fagen\, Matthew Arthur Williams\, and Tilda Williams Kelly. Working across video\, performance\, installation\, photography\, and sculpture\, the artists offer ways of seeing that disrupt official histories and invite more nuanced\, embodied understandings of place and power. \nPROGRAMME OF EVENTS\nThe exhibition is accompanied by a public programme curated by Dr Cat Dunn\, beginning with an anchor event designed to ground the research locally\, centre community dialogue\, and build critical context ahead of the exhibition opening. These events mark the start of a longer process of collective enquiry.

SUMMARY:Hidden Voices Hidden Lives
DESCRIPTION:DAY ONE — CASTLEHILL HERITAGE CENTRE\nSaturday 12 September (6pm–9pm)\nJoin us for an evening of film\, foraging\, stories and discussion as we explore our connections to place\, memory and the people whose histories are too often overlooked. \nWe’ll begin with a relaxed welcome and drinks made from foraged plants with Amanda from Nature’s Path\, Natural Ways\, before considering cultural repair and the ways our relationship with place can shape who we are. \nWriter and performer Harry Josephine Giles will join Davie Donaldson\, who will bring a selection of Traveller artefacts and objects to share. Through poetry\, objects\, stories and conversation\, we’ll explore the histories they carry — whose voices are heard\, whose are missed out\, and what our connections to place might mean for future generations. \nAs evening falls\, we’ll gather in the courtyard for an outdoor screening of Who Will Be Remembered Here? — a powerful 30-minute film exploring memory\, loss and the traces we leave behind. Afterwards\, there will be time to reflect and share thoughts together. \nThe evening will conclude with a special invitation from local archivist Jamie McCaffrey to think creatively about the places that matter to us\, inspired by the collections at Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives in Wick. \nFree to attend\, but booking is essential. \nPlease note\nMuch of this event takes place outdoors\, so please come prepared for the Caithness weather! Bring a warm coat and\, if you can\, a blanket or cushion for the outdoor screening. \nIf the weather doesn’t behave\, the screening will take place indoors. \n  \nDAY TWO — LYTH ARTS CENTRE\nSunday 13 September (6pm–9pm)\nJoin us for an evening of foraging\, making and shared food as we explore Traveller traditions\, cultural knowledge and our relationships with the landscapes around us. \nYou’ll take part in two activities: head out in small groups with Amanda from Nature’s Path\, Natural Ways to discover and forage plants growing around us\, and work with Donald Williamson\, a member of the Scottish Travelling community\, to help construct a traditional bender — or bow — tent. \nFor centuries\, these shelters were an essential part of nomadic life. As we build together\, Donald will share knowledge of the traditional skills\, creativity and resourcefulness that enabled Travelling people to make homes from the materials around them. \nWe’ll then bring what we’ve gathered together for a shared meal\, alongside a small display exploring Traveller histories and lives in the north of Scotland\, including photographs connected to the extraordinary Johnston Collection. \nOver food and conversation\, Donald Williamson\, Davie Donaldson and Lewis Hetherington will come together to explore place\, identity\, creativity\, ecology and the stories we carry with us. \nThe evening will conclude with a special invitation from local archivist Jamie McCaffrey to think creatively about the places that matter to us\, inspired by the collections at Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives in Wick. \nFree to attend\, but booking is essential. \nPlease note\nPart of the evening will take place outdoors\, so please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear. Come ready to get involved\, meet new people\, make something together and share a meal. \n  \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:Bat and Moth Evening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a chill evening spotting bats and moths fluttering around in the woods after dark! \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy a ranger led\, family friendly\, bat watch at Newton Hill Croft Community woodland. Use our electronic bat detectors to hear and locate the bats as they hunt insects in the darkness. Learn all about the life cycle of these fascinating mammals and how you can help to protect them. \nWe will also be demonstrating how to set up a moth trap\, and looking at some locally caught moths before safely releasing them where they were caught. \nThe cottage is all abilities friendly\, with toilet facilities available. We will spend some time setting up the moth trap and chatting about bats and moths before setting off on a short walk around the trees with the bat detectors. We’ll then return to the cottage where we’ll look at the moths and there will be some kids crafts on offer. Wear suitable warm clothing and bring a torch. We can stay under cover and still watch bats from the outdoor shelter\, if the weather isn’t too good. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. \n  \nBooking is essential. SUMMARY:Kenny's Ceilidh
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Mackenzie has inspired many Sutherland youngsters to engage with music\, and with Gaelic song in particular. For more than three quarters of a century he has enjoyed attending Mòds as a competitor\, a choir conductor and as an audience member. His journey with Gaelic choirs travelled full circle from a young chorister under the teaching of his headmaster Angus M Ross (Rossie) to conducting that same choir during his own years as headmaster at Lochinver Primary School. \nDuring his young adulthood he sang with his brother\, Rod and his own late wife\, Marlene\, and sister-in-law Joan and Marlene and Kenny continued to sing together at many concerts and cèilidhs throughout the region. Their close harmony singing inspired local youngsters and family visiting Achiltibuie and Lochinver where Mackenzie house cèilidhs were a welcome occurrence. \nIn this cèilidh celebrating his years of involvement with Gaelic music his legacy will be showcased by former pupils\, among them Mòd Gold medallists\, James Graham and Duncan Macleod\, Rory Matheson\, Rona MacLeod\, his nieces Eilidh and Fiona Mackenzie as well as extended family.
