SUMMARY:The Kiln Gallery presents: 'Shipshape' by Joanne B. Kaar
DESCRIPTION:Dive into Joanne B. Kaar’s exhibition Shipshape\, telling the story of Strathnaver’s boatbuilding heritage. Free with a ticket to our mill. \n\n\n\n\nJoanne B. Kaar’s Shipshape exhibition\, exploring the techniques and tools used in traditional boat building\, will open on the 1st of April in the John O’Groats Mill’s Kiln Gallery. It will run until the 12th of July. \nThe exhibition is the culmination of Joanne’s 2024 artist residency at the Strathnaver Museum. Inspired by the Strathnaver community boat building project\, Joanne began to explore the intangible cultural heritage surrounding traditional boat building tools\, techniques and the words used. \nAddressing the question of how do we record and preserve ICH Joanne turned to printing techniques with a focus on woodcut. Joanne spent time with the boat builders\, learning and recording the process\, tools and words associated with clinker-built boats. \nAdmission is free with entry to the John O’Groats Mill. The mill is open Thursday-Tuesday\, 10am-5pm. Last entry 4pm.

SUMMARY:The Life and Art of David Barrogill Keith - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of the extraordinary artwork and experiences of David Barrogill Keith\, exploring the creativity\, intellect and resolve which exemplified his life. \nThe exhibition brings together artwork from the collection of Robert Maitland\, local knowledge and research by historian Alan McIvor and the Caithness Archive Team\, alongside original records held at Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives. \nAffectionately known as ‘Barrogill Keith’ or ‘D.B. Keith’\, David Barrogill Keith was a well-known figure in Caithness and beyond\, with many of his original artworks still hanging in houses around the county today. However\, his life and work may not be as familiar to a modern audience and so this exhibition seeks to give a fuller account of both his experiences and his captivating paintings. \nVenue: North Coast Visitor Centre\, High St\, Thurso KW14 8AJ\nFrom the 6th to the 27th of June 2026*\, from 10am to 5pm. \n*Please note\, closed Sundays and Mondays. \n  \nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:Everyone Blames the Weather
DESCRIPTION:Everyone Blames The Weather is a festival at Timespan centred on migrant labour and seasonal work\, foregrounding the conditions\, knowledge\, and dignity of those who sustain the agricultural sector  in Scotland and the UK. \nPart of the public programme of As Long As it Yields\, by José García Oliva\, and developed in close dialogue with the artist\, the festival builds on the exhibition’s enquiry into how seasonal labour is organised\, experienced\, and rendered invisible. It traces how responsibility for exploitation is distributed across supply chains\, from employers and agencies to retailers and consumers\, and considers the implications for rights and working conditions. \nOver the weekend\, Everyone Blames The Weather brings together unions\, migrant workers\, academics\, and artists through talks\, discussions\, and film screenings\, alongside shared moments including dance workshops\, live music\, a community meal\, an evening barbecue\, workshops\, and a midsummer bonfire. \nTaking place at the summer solstice\, when agricultural cycles intensify\, the festival connects labour to seasonal time and to the rhythms of land and place\, offering a moment to gather\, listen\, and reflect together. \nThe title is drawn from García Oliva’s environmental installation on Timespan’s façade\, reflecting how weather is often used to justify disruption\, while responsibility for risk and loss is shifted onto workers. \nThe festival continues Timespan’s programme of seasonal gatherings\, including Salt and Silver in 2025 (curated by Joanne Coates and part of the public programme of the exhibition Red Herring)\, Becoming Futures in 2024 (curated by Almare)\, and the Eastre Weekend in 2023. \nAll festival activities are free. Helmsdale is especially busy at this time of year; early booking of accommodation is recommended. Two travel and accommodation bursaries for low income participants will be announced\, supporting wider access to the Highlands.

SUMMARY:Salt to Plate by Debasis Biswas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the heritage and conservation of salmon fisheries along the north coast of Scotland and beyond with local wildlife artist and documentary filmmaker Debasis Biswas. DB’s fascinating co-curated exhibition incorporates paintings\, sculptural pieces and a documentary film. \nThe story of the salmon fisheries is a human story of industry and resilience and DB has gathered a wealth of colourful and rich stories from those who worked these shores as part of what was once a thriving industry. DB’s engaging documentary incorporates these stories as he visits the buildings associated with the industry in the company of those who worked there. \nDB also explores the global story of the wild Atlantic salmon through art and science. The students at Farr High School led by High Life Highland Ranger Paul Castle explored the impact of micro plastics and marine litter on our environment during a litter pick. The students creative responses can be seen as part of the exhibition through sculptural pieces created by the waste gathered during their litter pick. \nSalt to Plate was developed as part of Strathnaver Museum’s 2024 Artist Residency Programme part funded by Museums Galleries Scotland\, The William Syson Foundation\, the Children’s and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund\, and which received £5\,755 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. \n20th June to 31st October\, Mon to Sat\, 10am to 5pm

SUMMARY:The peatlands of the Flow Country World Heritage Site
DESCRIPTION:A gentle stroll on the boardwalk on RSPB’s nature reserve. Discover how and why the special plants here make peat. \n\n\n\n\nJoin me for a gentle stroll on the RSPB’s Forsinard Flows nature reserve to discover the splendid peatland habitat with its World Heritage Site designation\, all from the comfort of a boardwalk and flagstone trail. \nPrepare to be shocked at how deep the peat is! Do you dare to bounce on it with me? Explore the many pools (with a pond net) and discover what lurks there. \nClimb the observation tower for spectacular views. Learn about the special peatland birds and plants and marvel at the landscape as we look across the Ben Griams Site of Special Scientific Interest. Hear about some of its secrets. Watch out for eagles and bog wading birds. \n\n\nProper outdoor clothing is recommended in case of inclement weather. The trail might be wet in places\, so do wear walking boots or wellingtons. \nNot suitable for dogs. \n\nBook places on Eventbrite.
