SUMMARY:The Kiln Gallery presents: 'Shipshape' by Joanne B. Kaar
DESCRIPTION:Dive into Joanne B. Kaar’s exhibition Shipshape\, telling the story of Strathnaver’s boatbuilding heritage. Free with a ticket to our mill. \n\n\n\n\nJoanne B. Kaar’s Shipshape exhibition\, exploring the techniques and tools used in traditional boat building\, will open on the 1st of April in the John O’Groats Mill’s Kiln Gallery. It will run until the 12th of July. \nThe exhibition is the culmination of Joanne’s 2024 artist residency at the Strathnaver Museum. Inspired by the Strathnaver community boat building project\, Joanne began to explore the intangible cultural heritage surrounding traditional boat building tools\, techniques and the words used. \nAddressing the question of how do we record and preserve ICH Joanne turned to printing techniques with a focus on woodcut. Joanne spent time with the boat builders\, learning and recording the process\, tools and words associated with clinker-built boats. \nAdmission is free with entry to the John O’Groats Mill. The mill is open Thursday-Tuesday\, 10am-5pm. Last entry 4pm.

SUMMARY:Gu'un the fish n'that by Beverley Carruthers
DESCRIPTION:Gu’un the fish n’that\, inspired by the cultural heritage of the women who worked as migrant workers in the herring industry\, is an evocative sound installation by East Anglian based artist Beverley Carruthers. \nInspired by the story of her own Grandmother Barbara Aliston\, Beverley compiled in depth interviews with the last generation of Fesh Quines exploring their stories through the labour and living conditions they endured alongside their enriching living history and cultural legacy of knitting and singing. Beverley has expertly woven these elements into this engaging and fascinating sound installation. \nBeverley’s work resists the romanticised version of the herring girls history\, which has often been marginalised anyway\, instead celebrating the women’s migrant labour and their importance to the fishing industry. \n3rd April to 6th June\, Mon to Sat\, 10am to 5pm

SUMMARY:Where Did We Come From?
DESCRIPTION:Sparsile Books (Glasgow) presents an evolution/ancestor-themed event at Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives. Join us for a light hearted performance for anyone who is curious about their ancestors\, right back to the first one celled life form (called Kevin\, incidentally.) It would also appeal to those interested in the origins of music\, and the way music and words can combine – inviting us to think about the way landscape can seem to also have a sound – a sound that seems to hark back to earlier memories of who we once were and what our ancestors may have wanted. \nAuthor readings\, music and Q&A with Cynthia Rogerson\, Kirsty Gunn\, David Graham and Alpha Munro. \nNo booking required\, all welcome.

SUMMARY:Earth Mind Geotour
DESCRIPTION:After the success of the inaugural Earth Mind Geotour in 2025\, dates have already been confirmed for a 2026 tour! A sensory and creative journey of self-discovery around sites of geological interest\, led by psychotherapist and geologist Ruth Allen\, and author and geologist John McLellan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her book Weathering\, author\, psychotherapist and geologist Ruth Allen explores geological processes as a metaphor for human life and experience. In this first-of-a-kind workshop\, in the beautiful wilds of the NW Highlands\, Ruth will take you on a sensory and creative journey of self-discovery around sites of geological interest where you will have the chance to learn about this stunning part of the world\, and connect deeply with yourself and the landscape around you\, inspired by some of the oldest rocks in Europe. \nTogether we will consider our relationship with deep and dynamic time\, connect with themes of resilience and resourcing for the pressurised lives we live\, spend nourishing time learning to listen to the slow world of rock\, and plenty more besides. \nThis is a chance to ground; to deepen rather than widen\, and take the time you need for space and contemplation in ancient landscapes that have the power to connect us to both stillness and aliveness.Though we will move around different locations together\, getting to know the rocks and each other along the way\, you will be invited through facilitated exercises and prompts to take the time you need to connect with yourself in order to ask yourself (and perhaps start to answer) the questions we often don’t have time for in the rush of our day-to-day lives. For example\, What do I want and need more of in my life? What matters to me? In what ways do I need to look after myself differently? \nWhether you are in particular need of some time spent in solitude\, if you have a curiosity or draw to geological landscapes\, or you are looking for new ways to deepen your relationship with the natural world for your health and wellbeing\, this workshop will offer you creative space to engage with the world around you a little differently and help you make the geological\, personal. You do not need to have any prior experience\, or any particular fitness level. Just an openness to meeting and listening to yourself and the world around you. \n\nMonday 4th May – 7.00pm – 8.30pm. Meet the team. An introduction to methodology plus any Q & A.\nTuesday 5th May\, Wednesday 6th May and Thursday 7th May will be half day excursions visiting various locations such as Knockan Crag and Inchnadamph\, Achmelvich and Clachtoll with a lunch break at the Rock Stop.\nTwo optional evening sessions are also being considered – Authors event on Wed 6th (with John McLellan and Ruth Allen) and a final evening event.\n\nWhat you will need to bring (in addition to usual all-weather gear): \n\nNotebook\, pens and/or drawing materials\nSomething portable to sit (or lie!) on – sit mats\, small portable chair etc

SUMMARY:Birdwatching on the RSPB’s Forsinain Trail\, Forsinard Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Birdwatching on the RSPB’s Forsinain Trail\, Forsinard Nature Reserve with Graham Thompson\, A Far North Naturalist \nCovering a variety of habitats – river\, farm\, moor\, dubh lochan\, bog and conifer plantation – this walk SHOULD bring a variety of birds. \n\n\n\nIncorporating a trail at my former workplace (RSPB Forsinard)\, which includes areas of ‘forest-to-bog’ restoration work that I was involved in. \nThis route is 6.4 km (4 miles) in length. There are some moderately difficult slopes to climb/descend. The trail is likely to be wet in places\, so suitable footwear is required. \nThis is a 4 1/2 to 5 hour walk approximately\, so bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink! \nCovering a variety of habitats – river\, farm\, moor\, dubh lochan\, bog and conifer plantation – this walk SHOULD bring a good variety of birds (nothing guaranteed!)\, namely: Common Sandpiper\, Greenshank\, Golden Plover (pictured)\, Lapwing\, Snipe\, Oystercatcher\, Curlew\, Greylag Goose\, Hen Harrier\, Cuckoo\, Stonechat\, Linnet\, Crossbill\, Redpoll\, Siskin\, Goldcrest\, Blue Tit\, Great Tit\, Coal Tit\, Long-tailed Tit\, Dipper\, Sky Lark\, Meadow Pipit\, Pied Wagtail\, Grey Wagtail\, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush. There’s also a chance of Dunlin and Red-throated Diver. Quail has occasionally appeared here in May in the past\, Grasshopper Warbler too\, more frequently (both species are more likely to be heard than seen!). Seeing Red Deer is possible. \nIn addition to birds\, the bog pools will have floristic interest: the spectacular Bogbean should be flowering. Four-spot Chaser dragonflies (photo) should be on the wing. The results of the forest-to-bog restoration work is also interesting to see.\nCar parking at Forsinain next to the Halladale River here: w3w///pulsing.dwarves.bandwagon. NC90364855 \nIf there are ANY species you’d particularly like to see\, that perhaps don’t feature on this walk\, I am available for hire and could concentrate on finding it/them with you \nDiscover more and sign up via Eventbrite.
