We are millers at the Barony Mill in Birsay, Orkney. We sell stoneground oatmeal but, most especially, our locally-grown bere, an ancient form of barley, going back to Neolithic times, is offered as our own “beremeal”, barley flour, once a staple of the Scottish diet now largely “forgotten” outside Orkney, though it is “probably the flour your grannie used to bake with”!
We have beremeal biscuits specially baked for us by Stewart and Margaret McConnach at Caithness Biscuits, Forss (Stewart was born and bred in Orkney, just three miles from the Mill!) and these will be on sale to allow customers to remember the unique taste of Beremeal, and learn about its nutritional goodness giving numerous health benefits. There are two sweet and two savoury biscuits.
